Asia News Wrap: Vietnam to cut size of government, and more

Vietnam’s National Assembly approved a reform plan to reduce government ministries from 18 to 14, aiming to cut costs and enhance administrative efficiency. The measure, which takes effect on March 1, received overwhelming support from lawmakers, with over 97 percent voting in favor.

Meanwhile, South Korea’s impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol appeared in court for his insurrection trial, with his lawyers arguing for his release, citing an alleged illegal investigation.

In Thailand, a proposed law would require locals to meet strict financial conditions to enter casinos, effectively limiting access to wealthier citizens. India launched a $57.58 million space technology fund to support early-stage projects and reduce reliance on imports, fostering greater private sector involvement in the space industry.

In Sri Lanka, President Anura Kumara Dissanayake presented a budget focused on economic recovery, aiming to resume debt repayments by 2028 following the country’s financial crisis and IMF bailout.
