A federal judge in Seattle temporarily blocked President Donald Trump’s executive order to end birthright citizenship, calling it “blatantly unconstitutional.” Judge John Coughenour’s ruling halts the order for at least 14 days as lawsuits proceed. Washington Attorney General Nick Brown, joined by other states and immigrant rights groups, argued the order violates the 14th Amendment, which guarantees citizenship to anyone born in the U.S. The Trump administration claims the amendment excludes children of non-resident aliens. If enforced, the order could deny citizenship to 150,000 babies annually.
