Social media app Xiaohongshu (RedNote) has experienced a surge in English content as U.S. “TikTok refugees” flock to the platform amid fears of an impending TikTok ban. RedNote has become the most downloaded free app in the U.S., with over 109,000 posts under the hashtag #TikTokRefugee. New users are sharing pet photos, seeking memes, and interacting with Chinese users, who welcome them by explaining platform rules.
Users chose RedNote over U.S. alternatives like Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts because of its established popularity in China, global content accessibility, and as a form of protest against the TikTok ban. However, RedNote’s rise may draw U.S. government scrutiny and face domestic data privacy challenges in China. The situation may ease if the TikTok ban is lifted before its January 19 deadline.
