Lebanon’s army chief, Joseph Aoun, was elected president on Thursday after securing 99 votes in a second-round parliamentary session. His election ends a presidential vacancy that lasted over two years, since former President Michel Aoun’s term ended in October 2022. Joseph Aoun initially failed to secure the two-thirds majority required in the first round but won in the second round, where only 65 votes were needed.
