Iranians marked the fifth anniversary of the U.S. killing of General Qassem Soleimani on January 3, 2020, in a nationwide commemoration. Soleimani, former commander of the IRGC Quds Force, and Iraqi militia leader Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis were killed in a U.S. drone strike near Baghdad airport, which Iran called an act of “state terrorism.”
Events were held across the country, including a large gathering in Tehran attended by senior officials and military leaders. In Soleimani’s hometown of Kerman, thousands visited his tomb. Officials praised Soleimani’s sacrifices, urging unity among Muslims to counter external threats.
