South Korea’s acting president, Choi Sang-mok, has declined resignation offers from senior presidential secretaries, emphasizing the need to focus on stabilizing livelihoods and state affairs. These resignations were offered by aides of impeached President Yoon Suk-yeol.
The offers came after Choi appointed two justices to the constitutional court, filling vacancies critical for Yoon’s impeachment trial. For Yoon’s removal, at least six of the nine justices must uphold the impeachment. Yoon’s powers are suspended during the trial, which can last up to 180 days.
Yoon faces allegations of insurrection after briefly declaring martial law on December 3, which was later revoked by the National Assembly.
