China sends emergency relief supplies to quake-hit Vanuatu

China has sent emergency relief supplies to Vanuatu following a 7.3-magnitude earthquake on December 17 that caused casualties and severe damage. A shipment, including tents, beds, water purification equipment, solar lamps, food, and medical supplies, departed Shenzhen on Wednesday and is expected to arrive in Port Vila early Thursday.

China has also provided $1 million in aid and sent four engineering experts to assist with disaster response and reconstruction. Chinese Ambassador Li Minggang visited families of Chinese nationals who died in the earthquake, offering condolences and support. This marks China’s first emergency post-disaster assessment mission to a Pacific island country.
