The Group of “Friends for Peace” held a meeting at the UN on December 18, 2024, following their Ministerial Meeting in September. Participants highlighted the Global South’s significant involvement in the earlier meeting and the group’s collective concerns about the Ukraine crisis.
The group reaffirmed principles from their joint communique, emphasizing respect for sovereignty, peace, and peaceful conflict resolution based on the Bandung principles. They reviewed the Ukraine conflict’s escalation risks, stressing the need for de-escalation and non-expansion of hostilities.
The participants called for an inclusive, diplomatic resolution in line with the UN Charter and international law, starting with a ceasefire. They urged the global community, including the Global South, to support a peaceful settlement and agreed to continue active engagement through the group.
