Macao has become one of Asia’s wealthiest cities in 25 years since returning to China. Its GDP in 2023 reached $47.5 billion, a sevenfold increase from 1999. President Xi Jinping praised Macao as “a pearl on the palm” of China during his visit to mark the 25th anniversary, highlighting the success of the “One Country, Two Systems” framework.
Key achievements include improved connectivity with Zhuhai, the establishment of the Guangdong-Macao Cooperation Zone, and strong economic progress. Xi expressed confidence in Macao’s future and will attend anniversary celebrations and meet local officials.
