Impeached South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol plans to speak in court during public hearings for his impeachment trial, according to his defense counsel. The constitutional court will hold its first preliminary hearing on December 27. Yoon faces a rebellion charge for imposing martial law on December 3, which was quickly revoked by the National Assembly.
A second impeachment motion passed on December 14 has suspended Yoon’s presidential powers for up to 180 days while the court deliberates. Yoon defends his actions as necessary to counter a “legislative dictatorship” and will have separate legal teams for the impeachment trial and the ongoing criminal investigation. It remains unclear if Yoon will comply with a summons for questioning on December 21.
