NASA’s Webb telescope finds planet-forming disks lived longer in early universe

NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope has confirmed that planet-forming disks lasted longer in the early universe, building on earlier evidence from the Hubble Space Telescope. A 2003 Hubble discovery suggested planets formed around very old stars, even in environments with few heavy elements. Webb’s new observations of a nearby galaxy similar to the early universe revealed that some stars still have these long-lived disks, challenging current models of planet formation. Study leader Guido De Marchi emphasized the need to rethink how planets evolved in the young universe.
