Europe’s sun-studying Proba-3 mission lifts off on Indian rocket

The European Space Agency (ESA) launched Proba-3, a sun-observing mission, on Thursday aboard the Indian Space Research Organisation’s (ISRO) PSLV-XL rocket. The mission, which was delayed by a technical issue, aims to study the sun’s inner corona to better understand space weather’s economic and technological risks. Proba-3 is a two-satellite system designed for a two-year mission. The launch strengthens ESA’s solar research efforts, complementing its Solar Orbiter. The mission will help investigate solar phenomena like coronal mass ejections that can disrupt Earth’s communications and power systems. The project costs approximately 200 million euros and involves over 40 European companies.
