Space firms plot new European satellite venture to take on Starlink

Airbus, Thales, and Leonardo are exploring the creation of a joint European space company, codenamed “Project Bromo,” to compete with Elon Musk’s Starlink. The plan involves merging satellite assets into a standalone entity modeled after the missile maker MBDA, which is jointly owned by Airbus, Leonardo, and BAE Systems.

The project aims to strengthen Europe’s satellite industry, which has struggled with losses due to competition from low-cost, small satellites in low Earth orbit. Talks are still in the early stages, and implementation could take years. Leonardo CEO Roberto Cingolani confirmed the MBDA-inspired structure, highlighting the growing importance of satellites, expected to comprise 75% of the space economy.
