Philippine groups to seek impeachment of Vice President Duterte

An alliance of civil society groups in the Philippines will file an impeachment complaint against Vice President Sara Duterte on Monday, according to the Akbayan party-list. Duterte, who is at odds with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., is under investigation for alleged spending irregularities, which she denies. The impeachment complaint, backed by civil society organizations and families of victims of her father’s war on drugs, will be submitted to the lower house, though the specific grounds for impeachment have not been disclosed. This move is part of a larger public dispute between Duterte, Marcos, and other political figures following the breakdown of their families’ alliance. Duterte had recently made controversial remarks about a plot to kill Marcos and his associates, which she later claimed were taken out of context. Marcos dismissed the impeachment complaint as a distraction.
