South Korea’s opposition party, the Democratic Party (DP), demanded President Yoon Suk-yeol resign or face impeachment after his surprise declaration of martial law was rejected by the National Assembly. The martial law was declared on Tuesday in response to perceived threats from North Korea and domestic unrest, but was quickly lifted after lawmakers defied security forces and voted against it. The declaration, the first in 45 years, included restrictions on political activities, media, and protests. Despite the reversal, the DP insists Yoon is unfit to govern, with senior staff offering to resign. International reactions included concern from the U.S. and relief after the martial law was lifted. Critics called Yoon’s actions a sign of desperation and a failure of leadership.
