U.S. health officials confirmed the first U.S. case of a new mpox strain initially found in eastern Congo. The patient, treated in Northern California after traveling to eastern Africa, is recovering at home. The risk to the public is low, and close contacts are being notified.
Mpox, related to smallpox, causes symptoms like fever, body aches, and in severe cases, skin lesions. The new strain spreads through close contact, including sexual transmission. It has mainly affected African countries, with over 3,100 cases since late September. Cases have also been reported in Germany, India, and the UK. Efforts in Africa include calls for 10 million vaccines to curb the outbreak.
