A South Korean parliamentary committee has approved a bill imposing prison sentences for the possession or viewing of deepfake explicit content in response to growing concerns over digital exploitation crimes. The revised law mandates penalties of up to three years in prison or fines up to 30 million won (about $22,500). It exempts individuals who unknowingly encounter such material. Additional revisions to child protection laws introduce harsher penalties for using exploitative material to blackmail or coerce minors. The South Korean government plans to invest in technology to detect digitally fabricated content, including deepfakes, amid rising cases of cyber exploitation crimes.
