Germany’s border control move sparks concerns across EU

Germany has reinstated passport checks at all its land borders to address irregular migration, terrorism threats, and cross-border crime, prompting concerns from neighboring countries and the European Union (EU). This decision, following violent incidents like a recent stabbing in Solingen, has raised fears about disruptions to the Schengen Area’s free movement. Neighboring countries, especially the Netherlands and Poland, worry about the impact on trade and European unity. Transport and Logistics Netherlands (TLN) warned of delays in supply chains, while Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk criticized the move as politically motivated. Other EU countries, such as Austria, Slovakia, and Italy, have also tightened border controls, causing friction within the Schengen Area. The European Commission is discussing the issue with Germany, noting that border checks are permissible under Schengen rules for significant security threats.
