Africa CDC warns of rising mpox cases, launches response plan with WHO

Africa is experiencing a rise in mpox cases, prompting the Africa CDC and WHO to launch a six-month response plan from September 2024 to February 2025, with a nearly $600 million budget. Most of the funds will support mpox response in affected countries, with the rest going to operational and technical support.

Since 2024, Africa has reported 24,851 suspected mpox cases, including 5,549 confirmed cases and 643 deaths. The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) has become the epicenter, contributing 90% of the cases.

A new, more dangerous variant of the virus, clade 1b, has spread beyond Africa, with cases reported in Sweden and Thailand. The DRC received its first batch of mpox vaccines, but a vaccination strategy is still in development.
