A study by Everytown for Gun Safety and the K-12 School Shooting Database found a 31% rise in U.S. school shootings during the 2023-24 academic year compared to the previous year. With at least 144 incidents of gun violence reported on school campuses, it was the second-highest year since tracking began over a decade ago. The shootings resulted in 36 deaths and 87 injuries, including 46 children wounded. Researchers cited “easy access to firearms” and inadequate school safety measures, alongside a youth mental health crisis, as contributing factors to the increase. The study emphasized the broader issue of guns on school campuses, beyond just fatal incidents.
