Former CIA software engineer Joshua Schulte has been sentenced to 40 years in prison for what the U.S. government deemed the largest theft of classified information in the CIA’s history. The sentencing, held in Manhattan federal court, primarily focused on Schulte’s release of classified CIA secrets through WikiLeaks in 2017, known as the “Vault 7” leak. The disclosures exposed CIA hacking operations targeting Apple and Android smartphones, as well as attempts to turn internet-connected TVs into listening devices. Schulte, who helped create the hacking tools while working at the CIA, has been in jail since 2018. The judge emphasized the significant damage caused by the leak, stating that “we will likely never know the full extent of the damage.” Despite Schulte’s complaints about prison conditions, the judge criticized his lack of remorse and acceptance of responsibility, noting that he continued criminal activities from behind bars. The 40-year sentence includes time for both the CIA theft and convictions related to Schulte’s viewing of child sexual abuse materials from jail.
