Britain’s aviation regulator, the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), is actively exploring designs for airports dedicated to flying taxis, also known as electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft (eVTOL). These flying taxis are considered a potential future mode of urban air mobility, providing efficient travel between cities and airports, bypassing ground traffic. However, the successful implementation of eVTOLs faces challenges such as regulatory approval, ensuring safety, and developing appropriate infrastructure for take-off and landing. The CAA is launching a consultation to assess how these dedicated eVTOL airports, called “vertiports,” can integrate into existing small airfields while ensuring safe and efficient operations. The focus initially will be on utilizing small airfields for vertiports.
