On Wednesday night in Lewiston, Maine, a series of mass shootings resulted in at least 18 deaths. The suspect, U.S. Army reservist Robert Card, 40, is currently on the run and considered armed and extremely dangerous. An arrest warrant for eight counts of murder has been issued, but this number is expected to rise as more victims are identified. President Joe Biden has urged residents to follow local law enforcement’s instructions to stay indoors. Banks and schools in the area have been closed, and authorities advise against approaching Card if spotted, instead urging people to call 911. Card had a history of mental health concerns and was briefly committed to a facility in July after making threats. New U.S. House Speaker Mike Johnson expressed hope for an end to the violence and called for prayers for the victims.
