Chile sees heat wave in the middle of winter, temperatures reach 37 C

A winter heat wave in Chile, bringing record high temperatures, is being seen by scientists as a glimpse into a warmer future. Following the hottest global July on record, northern and central Chile experienced an unusual heat wave in early August, with temperatures much higher than typical winter norms. The Coquimbo region saw temperatures reaching 37 degrees Celsius, while even the capital, Santiago, reached 25 degrees Celsius—far higher than its usual winter temperature of around 15 degrees Celsius. Experts suggest that this extreme event could become more commonplace in the coming years, reflecting the broader global issue of rising temperatures. Chilean meteorologists anticipate the hot weather to persist for the week, with some areas exceeding 30 degrees Celsius.
