Myanmar libraries’ improvement

Libraries play an important role in creating a healthy community. The collections of sources of education, enlightenment, and entertainment are kept in one place which is called a library. Libraries provide expensive resources, especially books, and like periodicals, electronic databases. People can introduce their ideas at libraries by reading books and making research with all the data stored in libraries. Libraries offer highest support for education and study.


As the library is concerned with education, schools libraries are also supporting every student to get wider knowledge and better mindsets. The school libraries provide enriched reading and learning. And also it allows students to choose the topic they want to read, so they are developed in their interests and strengths at their pace.

The presences of good librarians who will handle the good libraries are also necessary. Librarians have to select good resources, catalogue and classify them and maintain the library materials. They also have to control the databases and information systems well to access information.

For the nation's emerged librarians, "22th Ceremony of Paying Respect to Librarians " organized by Myanmar Library Association was held at the Diamond Jubilee Hall on 8th February.

Daw Tin Phone Nwe, Central Library Intendant who worked at Universities' Central Library for 18 years said, "With the support of the association's president and vice president, the public interest of the library and information sector has increased. Also in the past years, matriculation students only wanted to become doctors and engineering stuffs but now they have started having interest in this sector. Not only libraries provide for the books to read, but also librarians have to offer more information when the visitors ask for."

Digital libraries are the combination of technology, together with information resources to allow access easier than the physical resources. It offers the connection of people with formal, informal, and professional learning missions.

Daw Tin Phone Nwe also shared how libraries in Myanmar introduced the digitization processes."I worked at Department of History for 35 years and went to France on government's scholarship plan. When I came back here, I took charge at Universities' Central Library in 1990. There were only the process of rental services and reading for books and digitization systems occurred one year later. We even have the very first newspapers of Myanmar and ancient books here in this library and it can't be processed in the rental services so digitization is a must to share the heritages of literature."

Myanmar Library Association is a non-governmental organization and founded in 1990, aimed to offer helps for every citizens in reading and the development of providing and access of information to all over the country together with the advanced technology.

U Maung Maung Soe, Founder of Save The Library said, "Libraries have improved a lot and changed into community-based which will fill the information gap within the society. We created "Save The Library" application with the collection of data and e-resources. We aimed at the union of libraries from all over the country by connecting each other and the information access on this application. Also, one can get the informations about the literature talks, and any other events concerning with literature."

Daw Myat San Nwe, Vice-President 1 of Myanmar Library Association said, "We started raising the school libraries of 10 schools with the support by NGOs and INGOs. Now the Ministry of Education provides helps for the reborn of school libraries in 50 schools and is also planning to reach 115 schools from all over the country this year. The MLA is working for the improvement in the libraries with an increase in the number of skillful librarians."

For those who have interest in Library and Information studies, there is also a one-month-long workshop on how the libraries are circulating, in May and December of every year at school libraries, community libraries and academic libraries.
