08 November 2018

Myanmar is set to host the World Billiards and Snooker Championship 2018 from November 12th to 27th, at Grand Mercure Hotel in Yangon.197 billiards and snooker players from 36 countries all across the world are going to participate in the championship.

Dates for World Billiards are 12th – 18th November 2018; and

For World Snooker, dates are 19th – 27th November 2018

Dr. Min Naing, president of the Myanmar Billiards and Snooker Federation (MBSF), speaking at the press conference, said that the countries did not want to send their players to Myanmar due to the exaggerated rumors of the peace status in Myanmar.

The federation has tried to convince the international community that the country is safe and suitable to host the world tournament.

Dr. Min Naing said, “ When I visited Qatar in September 25th, what surprised me was that the chair and secretary of the International Billiards and Snooker Federation, told me that international players, especially players from Europe, don’t want to come to  your country… due to the conflict, the Rakhine issue. And I told them that it is no longer as bad as the international media are writing. And they told me … Yes we know that it’s not as bad as it’s reported as we ourselves have visited the country in March and witness the peaceful situation for ourselves. But the international community would not accept it just by saying so. Then, they asked me to make a video, inviting the international players and they posted it on the website.

And another thing is that there is this Indian player who won the championship title in the Asian tournament recently. He has also visited Myanmar in March.  So they interviewed him in a video where he invites the players and shares that Myanmar is safe. And they posted it on the website.”

The federation also presented a video, showcasing the 5-star hotel to attract the players and also arranged a tour for the international players and referees of over 200 to Yangon’s tourist attractions.

The federation said that it has allocated over 200,000,000 MMK to successfully organize this championship.

Myanmar sports contingent comprising 22 billiards and snooker players will participate in World Billiards and Snooker Championship 2018.

Myanmar has ranked third at the Billiards at the World Billiards Championship in 2007, 2016 and 2017. The tournament will be held with five events.

U Khin Maung Oo, Secretary of the MBSF explained, shared the expectation for the prizes.

“For billiards, we have won prizes over the recent years so in this championship hosted in Myanmar, we expect the top prizes as well. For men snooker, one of our players, Ko Htet, got first prize at the tournament in Malaysia recently. He has pretty much a lot of international experience. We also have other players with experience. We have provided the best support to the snooker players. And we expect prizes. But for woman snooker, there are only woman players who play pool only. So they don’t have much experience. So it’s a bit tight for the lady snooker.”

Shuttle buses will be arranged for the spectators for free, running from Aung San stadium, downtown to the venue place, Grand Mercure Hotel.

The prizes for the various types of Billiards and Snookers championships, range from USD 8,000 to USD 16,000. If Myanmar players win the championship, the MBSF will also be rewarding the additional cash prize of 10,000,000 MMK and 30,000,000 MMK worth of car (which is about USD 26,000 in total).
